SUMMARY:Adult Field Course: Grandfather’s Starry Skies
DESCRIPTION:October is one of the best times of year to stargaze at Grandfather Mountain. The air is cool and clear\, and the summer constellations are still very prominent\, with some early winter sights making their appearance later in the evening. Our goal for this class is to create a familiarity with the night sky and learn the basics of stargazing that can be applied on your own on any clear night throughout the year. We’ll start in the classroom by exploring some of the best print and digital resources for exploring the night sky and cover some of the basics of stargazing and how to orient to the night sky. We’ll also discuss the use of planispheres\, star maps and star charts to find some of the most beautiful deep sky wonders that can be seen through binoculars or small telescopes. During the evening hours\, we’ll be out at various viewing locations on the mountain\, practicing our stargazing skills while looking for meteors and learning about some of the most prominent stars\, constellations and other objects visible this time of year. This event costs $60 for general admission and $51 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club – plus tax. Limited to 15 participants.

There will also be a display of classic cars and tractors. The food court is located in the same area and features a covered seating area. \nMain Street will be closed to traffic from United Fire and Safety to the old BB&T Bank. The old parking lot will feature classic cars and trucks. C-Cape will also be on hand\, displaying their unique power equipment — including tractors\, engines\, and more. \nLimited seating is available\, so bringing a lawn chair is recommended. \nBe sure to stop by the Chatham County Historical Association (CCHA) tent to share your stories and memories of the Goldston area. Goldston is over 100 years old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. CCHA needs your stories of Goldston’s past to help bring their collection to life. \nThis event is part of the countdown to Chatham Celebrates America 250.

Join us for a fun-filled day of exploring the twists and turns of the corn maze at Historic Rural Hill. This event is perfect for homeschool families looking for an exciting outdoor\, educational experience. \nNot only will homeschoolers have the chance to explore our educational five acre corn maze and special kid’s maze\, but the Rural Retreat Cabin will be open for tours. You may even get to see our beloved highland cattle! We will also have a food truck (food purchases are not included with ticket price) and bounce house available to enjoy. \nChildren must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Children 3 years and under are free. \nThe Rural Hill Corn Maze is a rain or shine event. No refunds will be issued for inclement weather. Should we need to cancel the homeschool day maze event due to extreme weather\, notice will be posted on our social media. \nPETS ARE NOT ALLOWED! \nUse the entrance off of Neck Road – no public entrance on Jim Kidd Road (no matter what your GPS tells you). \nAdults without children will not be permitted.
